Which #TeamPH athletes will be racing the IM World Champs in Kona?

The IRONMAN World Championships take centre stage in Hawaii on Saturday 12th October and there will be plenty of athletes carrying Precision Hydration in their bottles in Kona.

Ahead of the race on 'The Big Island', we caught up with several Team PH stars to discuss their ambitions for the race and to find out which PH products they'll be using...

 

Sarah Crowley

Category: Women's Pro
Qualified: IRONMAN Mar Del Plata
Race goals: Send it
Recent highlights: Mar Del Plata Champion, Hell of the West Champion, Taiwan 70.3 Champion, 2nd 70.3 Vietnam, 2nd IM Cairns, 2nd Challenge Roth, Santa Cruz 70.3 Champion.
When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs? I’m not really sure. I always focused on shorter distances, but I think I do remember watching it as a young kid on TV when Greg Welch won. 
What's your top tourist recommendation? Take a helicopter ride over the volcano and over to Hilo to see the other side of the island. 
PH products you use: On race day I'll use PH 1000 in the morning and PH 500 on the bike.

 

Carrie Lester

Qualified: IRONMAN France
Race goals: Top-10 
Recent highlights: IM Mont Tremblant Champion & course record.
What's your top tourist recommendation? Dive with the manta rays - never done it but always wanted to.
PH products you use: PH 1500 to pre-load & PH 1000 during the race, and SweatSalt Capsules.

 

Andrew Schleis

Qualified: IRONMAN Malaysia
Race goals: I really want to take it all in and have fun. With that being said I still want to give it my best shot.
Recent highlights: It's been a storybook year for me and I've ticked off a few bucket list races - racing Super League Triathlon in Singapore in February, then Challenge Roth in July, Norseman Extreme Tri in August and now Kona in October. I don’t think anyone has ever done these three races in one year. It truly has been a 'dream season'!
When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs?
It must have been back in the late 80’s when I was a swimmer in high school. I remember watching it on TV and I thought it was awesome, but never dreamed I would be competing there.
What's the top tourist thing you're most looking forward to? Geez, so many things. I’m getting married on the 15th on the beach in Kona! I want to 'geek out' on some of the Kona race experiences and I’ve always wanted to see Volcanoes National Park.

When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs? When Chrissie Wellington won her first IM World Championship.
What's the top tourist thing you're most looking forward to? Seeing all the cool fish in the sea

Chris Palfreyman

Category: Men's 30-34
Qualified: IRONMAN Wales
Race goals: Before getting injured my goal was a top-10 in my age group, but now it's a case of getting as far as I can before the foot injury stops me.
Recent highlights: ITU Long Distance Worlds (7th in AG) was a fantastic experience earlier this year. And currently training in the lava fields of Kona is a definite highlight!
When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs? About five years ago I came across the classic footage of the 'Iron War' which blew my mind at the time and I've wanted to race Kona ever since.
What's the top tourist thing you're most looking forward to? I dreamt of swimming with dolphins and the dream came true yesterday, when training on the swim course!
PH products you use: Out here I don't leave the house without my PH 1500! I will be using that all day during the bike leg and then the SweatSalt Capsules on the run.

Race goals: Try to be somewhat competitive in my age group.
Recent highlights: Age group win at IRONMAN Lanzarote and 2nd overall at Haugesund 70.3.
When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs? I was 16, when I first spectated at IRONMAN Wales.
What's the top tourist thing you're most looking forward to? I’m not one for crowded touristy places, but riding down the Queen K has always been something I’ve wanted to do!

Recent highlights: Finishing 2nd overall at the Challenge Almere
When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs? I first heard about the IM World Championships after finishing my first IM in Bolton in 2017. I then made it my mission to be on the start line.
What's your top tourist recommendation? As a huge coffee and chocolate addict, indulging in the Kona coffee and chocolate are my big favourites when on the Big Island.
PH products you use: PH 1000 & PH 1500 tablets - essential in Hawaii!

 

Laura Addie

Qualified: IRONMAN Vitoria
Race goals: Top-10 in age group
Recent highlights: Being selected to race for Team Freespeed and meeting all the lovely sponsors and related parties, love how close-knit and friendly the triathlon community is. Also my first full distance IRONMAN in Spain this July, something I never thought I’d be able to achieve when I took the sport up three years ago.
When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs? Only in the last two years! I was persuaded to attend a Go Tri event by my partner James who had raced a couple previously and since then we’ve never looked back. Can’t wait to get onto the Big Island after hearing so many amazing stories!
What's the top tourist thing you're most looking forward to? Swimming with manta rays and dolphins! Also whizzing up the Queen K!

When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs? Heard about Kona in about 2014.
What's your top tourist recommendation? I would hugely recommend watching a sunset or sunrise from the observatory at the top of Mauna Kea. 
PH products you use: I’m using PH 1500 and the SweatSalt Capsules.

 

Neil Eddy

Qualified: IRONMAN Vitoria-Gazteiz
Race goals: Podium
Recent highlights: Winning the overall age group in IRONMAN Spain and the ITU long course worlds at the start of the season.
When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs?
It was probably only 10 years or so ago, during the era of Crowie [Craig Alexander] and Macca [Chris McCormack], and I would briefly follow the action as a triathlon fan. 
What's your top tourist recommendation?
- Açai bowl from the place next to Huggos
- End Of The World (maybe after the race so you can jump off the rocks)
- Poke Shake (again after the race to be sure you don’t change your diet routine)
PH products you use: I'm a heavy and salty sweater so I’m going to be using a combination of the PH 1500 tablets, sachets and SweatSalt Capsules (run).

 

Stuart Anderson

Race goals: Top-five in Age group - I want to make it on stage this time
Recent highlights: 8th time racing Kona
When/where was the first time you heard of the IM World Champs? 2005 when I raced in the A-G ITU World Champs in Honolulu. Some of my friends travelled to Kona to watch the race the week after.
What's your top tourist recommendation? It's great fun to fool around in the Surf at 'Magic Sands' then go to 'Da Poke Shack' to eat.
PH products you use: PH 1500 the night before the race, and on race morning. PH 1000 on the bike, with the addition of one SweatSalt Capsule each hour.

If you're a Kona rookie, what's the top tourist thing you're most looking forward to: The Underpants Run!
PH products you use: PH 1500 pre-race, PH 1000 during the race.
