Louise's strategy
Fueling
T - 1-4hrs: Ate a carb rich meal (Low in fat & fibre)
T - 15mins: Took in a final dose of carb
"Energy-wise I felt strong the whole way round, but the drink mix didn't sit as well as the gels this time."
Louise front-loaded her gels early, taking them at 5, 10 and 20km, alongside drinking PF Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix in her marathon bottles picked up at the first five elite aid stations (also every 5km). She also picked up cola at the 30 and 35km aid stations, which meant that in total she averaged ~121g/h of carbohydrate across the full marathon. This is comfortably over the recommended 90g/h and a big step up from the ~78g/h she took on at the Amsterdam Marathon last October, a jump that required some serious gut training to tolerate. That intake is a big part of the story behind her performance, and she handled it well overall, but she flagged that the liquid carbohydrate seemed to cause her some discomfort this time around. Given that discomfort, it's worth trialling a slightly higher ratio of gels to drink mix in training, so she can hold the same high carb intake without leaning as heavily on the overconcentrated mix currently giving her more trouble.
Hydration
Taking on board an appropriate amount of fluid and sodium is essential to maintaining blood volume and supporting the cardiovascular effort needed to perform on race day.
Whilst the absolute amount of sodium and fluid consumed per hour is important, it’s critical to consider these in relation to each other. This is known as 'relative sodium concentration' and it’s expressed in milligrams per litre (mg/L). How much sodium you’re taking in per litre of fluid is more important than the absolute amount taken in per hour.

Sweat sodium concentration (mg/L) is largely genetically determined and remains relatively stable. Knowing how salty your sweat is enables you to replace a good proportion of your sweat losses, which can range from 200-2,000mg/L.
Whilst Louise's losses are on the low side, getting her hydration strategy right is still important if she wants to perform at her best.

"It didn't feel like a hot day out there, but I was still very thirsty by the finish. The nausea during the race was frustrating even though it didn't slow me down."
Conditions on the day were mild compared to 2025’s unexpected hot temperatures, sitting around ~14°C (12-16°C) with ~74% humidity, so this wasn't primarily a heat-driven hydration challenge. On race morning, Louise opted to use sodium bicarbonate a couple of hours before the race, on top of 500ml of PH 1500 as a preload. This isn’t something we would recommend; she’s already getting a solid sodium dose (~3.3g of sodium) from the bicarbonate pre-race, and therefore the additional 500ml of PH 1500 beforehand is largely redundant and can come out of her routine. During the marathon itself, she took on ~788ml/h of fluid at a relative sodium concentration of ~1154mg/L (excluding the bicarb dose), notably higher than her 716mg/L sweat sodium concentration. That in-race concentration came from mixing her PF Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix at three scoops per 500ml rather than the standard two. Notably, she was craving plain water by the finish, which also points to the in-race mix being more concentrated than she needed. Going forward, we'd suggest keeping her carbohydrate intake exactly where it is but aiming to reduce the concentration of her drinks so they are less electrolyte-heavy; for example mixing two scoops of PF Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix with one scoop of PF Carb Only Drink Mix, so the sodium concentration in her drinks can come down independently of her carb intake. She did pick up a quad cramp from around 20km that forced her to ease off between 25-35km before rallying over the closing 7km, but doesn't believe this was sodium-related; cramp is rarely down to one single cause, with fatigue, pacing and conditioning all plausible contributors alongside her fuelling strategy.
Caffeine
Beyond the Three Levers of Performance (carb, sodium and fluid), caffeine is one of only a few substances that is proven to improve performance for most endurance athletes as it can help stave off mental and physical fatigue.
T - 0-4hrs: Had a final hit of caffeine
Louise's caffeine intake came primarily from her PF 30 Caffeine Gel in the 30 minutes before the start plus ~500ml of cola in the closing stages of the race. That fell below the 3-6mg/kg typically associated with a performance benefit, though her race-morning coffee will have pushed her closer to the lower end of that range. She reported no issues with tolerance, so there's scope to add a second measured dose, such as a further caffeine gel, if she wants to nudge closer to the guideline in future races.

“This was a brilliant run from Louise: a marathon PB of 2:28:29, third British female home, and a call-up to the Team GB & NI marathon squad for the 2026 European Championships in Birmingham this August. The clearest area to refine before then is her sodium strategy; avoiding a double dose of sodium by dropping the PH 1500 preload when using sodium bicarbonate and dialling down the electrolyte concentration in her race drinks should help settle the nausea she experienced, without giving up any of the high carbohydrate intake that's clearly supporting her performance.
