Our thoughts

Becca planned out her carbohydrate intake precisely and kept to a strict regime of eating regularly to sit comfortably inside the 60-90g of carb per hour range. She started the day strong with a carbohydrate-rich breakfast, as well as PF Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix to provide additional carbohydrate and not feel full ahead of the early start. Becca was disciplined with her fueling, having two PF 30 Gels per hour, which she supplemented with PF 30 Chews throughout the day and a small amount of real food in an attempt to avoid flavour fatigue later on. She added to this by drinking PF Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix, which meant she consistently fueled above 60g/h for the 22-hours of racing. What stood out was Becca’s overnight fueling as she switched from gels and chews to proportionally more PF Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix, alongside real food (when her stomach allowed), to add some variety to her intake, as well as to overcome the issue of trying to eat whilst running on challenging terrain. Continuing to push that carbohydrate intake up to 90g/h is the next challenge for her to get some more fuel in the tank, especially for shorter races with a higher relative intensity.

Hydration

Taking on board an appropriate amount of fluid and sodium is essential to maintaining blood volume and supporting the cardiovascular effort needed to perform on race day.

Whilst the absolute amount of sodium and fluid consumed per hour is important, it’s critical to consider these in relation to each other. This is known as 'relative sodium concentration' and it’s expressed in milligrams per litre (mg/L). How much sodium you’re taking in per litre of fluid is more important than the absolute amount taken in per hour.

Our thoughts

Becca drank ~10L over the race using a combination of the PF Carb & Electrolyte Drink Mix, Electrolyte Capsules and plain water, her relative sodium concentration was 542mg/L. This is in line with previous sweat sodium concentration testing she has done which showed her sodium losses as low. Becca carried plain water with her at all times, so chose to top her sodium up using Electrolyte Capsules on a couple of occasions. Next time we’d recommend she aims to take 1-2 Electrolyte Capsules per every 500ml flask of water to consistently consume a similar concentration to her losses throughout, and avoiding long periods of time with just plain water.

Caffeine

Beyond the Three Levers of Performance (carb, sodium and fluid), caffeine is one of only a few substances that is proven to improve performance for most endurance athletes as it can help stave off mental and physical fatigue.

Our thoughts

Becca took in a total dose of ~140mg of caffeine, which lies below the 3-6mg/kg guidance based on her bodyweight. This was a deliberate choice given she can be sensitive to caffeine but she likely had minimal benefits of the ergogenic effects of the stimulant. Becca timed her PF 30 Caffeine Gel at 11:30 pm to give her a mental boost through the hard, rolling overnight session, which is a good approach. It will be worth testing using caffeine during training runs as this might mean she’s able to take two or three doses across the night during these long races, which will help fight her natural sleep-wake cycle.

Passing the finish line and knowing I had beat the course record by 27 seconds was a shock to me and I knew how hard I just pushed to get there.

This was a strong and consistent fueling and hydration performance that helped Becca break Rachel Entrekin’s course record at High Lonesome. This is testament to hard work, and precise planning from Becca and her crew. With a few tweaks, we can’t wait to see what results Becca can produce in her upcoming races!
